Time as a Divine Gift
In Islam, time is not just a linear dimension that runs from morning to night, but a mandate from God that must be filled with goodness. The Prophet SAW said:
> “There are two blessings that most people are deceived by, namely health and free time.” (HR. Bukhari).
This hadith emphasizes that time is a spiritual and social asset. Therefore, the division of seven hours a day and night in Islam contains a deep philosophical dimension, as a reminder for humans not to be disconnected from Allah in every phase of their lives.
Philosophical Values in the Concept of Seven Times a Day and Night
a. The Value of Divine Awareness (Transcendence)
Every time in Islam is marked by certain acts of worship, both fardhu and sunnah prayers. This instills awareness that humans cannot be separated from the supervision of Allah SWT. By maintaining the seven phases of time, a Muslim is trained to always be hudhur ma’a Allah (present with Allah).
📌 Philosophy: Time does not belong to humans, but to Allah. Humans are only managers (stewards) who are required to be responsible for every second.
b. The Value of Life Balance (Balance)
These seven times divide the rhythm of life into a balanced cycle between worldly activities and religious worship.
Fajar & Dhuha → start the day with spirituality.
Zuhr & Asr → break from busy work.
Maghrib & Isha → calming after activity.
Tahajjud → peak of spiritual reflection.
📌 Philosophy: Islam does not reject the world (material), but also does not allow humans to dissolve in it. Life is arranged to remain balanced (tawazun).
c. The Value of Discipline and Time Management
Attachment to prayer times and sunnah worship trains discipline. Each phase of time becomes a “spiritual alarm” so that humans are not negligent. In Islamic management philosophy, time discipline is a form of ‘worship’ amaliyah which gives birth to social order.
📌 Philosophy: Time is the “capital of life”. Ignoring one time means losing in the investment of the afterlife.
d. Spirituality and Closeness Values (Ihsan)
The seven times provide opportunities for humans to continually improve their spiritual quality. For example, tahajjud in the last third of the night is seen as the most effective time for prayer.
📌 Philosophy: Spirituality in Islam is not tied to a particular place, but is tied to the rhythm of time that repeats itself every day, thus training humans to stay close to Allah.
e. Value of Continuity of Worship (Continuity)
With the existence of seven times, a Muslim’s worship is not only seasonal or momentary, but continuous throughout the day. This reflects the concept of al-mudawamah (consistency in goodness).
📌 Philosophy: Humans should not experience “spiritual emptiness” in their lives; every phase of time is an opportunity to return to Allah.
F. Self-Reflection Values (Reflection)
Every turn of time reminds humans of the cycle of life:
dawn → birth,
Dhuha → youth,
midday → mature,
Asr → twilight,
Maghrib → towards the end of life,
Isha → death,
Tahajjud → resurrection in the afterlife.
📌 Philosophy: A day and a night are a miniature of human life, so every Muslim is invited to reflect and prepare to face death.
g. Social Values and Togetherness
Congregational prayer at seven phases of time teaches ukhuwah (brotherhood) and social solidarity. Islam instills the message that spirituality is not only a vertical relationship (human–God), but also horizontal (human–other).
📌 Philosophy: Spiritual life must not be disconnected from social reality. A Muslim who keeps the seven times will be more sensitive to his environment.
Conclusion
The concept of seven times a day and night in Islam is not just a technical division of worship, but is a philosophical map of Muslim life. The philosophical values contained in it include:
1. Divine awareness (transcendence),
2. Life balance (balance),
3. Discipline and time management,
4. Spirituality (ihsan),
5. Continuity of worship (mudawamah),
6. Self-reflection (reflection),
7. Social solidarity.
By understanding this philosophical value, a Muslim can live a life that is disciplined, full of meaning, and always connected to Allah SWT in every phase of his life.
